Marlborough 'MOP' Fair

Marlborough, High Street Saturday, the first of Marlborough’s two annual Mop Fairs is on Saturday, in line with the town’s charter given by King John in 1204 which said they should take place on the Saturdays either side of October 11.
Known as the Little Mop and Big Mop, they were originally hiring fairs at which domestic and agricultural workers would have been hired and it’s said that to show their trade they carried an implement... a mop by domestic workers or a rake or some other tool by farm workers.
In the Victorian years they became giant fun fairs, originally driven by steam but now with huge generators that create the electricity for the rides and the amplifiers that blast music the length of the High Street.
