Gloucestershire

Air Balloon, Birdlip

Air Balloon, Birdlip, Gloucestershire

The Air Balloon was originally two ale houses and provided for the needs of the travellers before the days of licensing. Many Balloon ascents were made from about 1784 onwards, and one Walter Powell ascended from Malmesbury and disapppeared without trace about that time. No evidence is recorded, however that he landed here! The Inn was next known as The Balloon in 1796 and recorded as the Air Balloon in 1802. It was owned as a part of Cowley Manor Estate until the early 20th Century. Current owners Greeneking acquired the Air Balloon in January 2004, after having a refurbishment in 2010 the character and charm is still catering for the needs of todays traveller, and is a busy stop off point for all walks of life. A very busy car park which used to be used as a drop off and pick up point is now being managed by a pay and display system thus ensuring that customers can park. All parking costs are redeemable against purchases made.
